Lampasas, TX
April 20 - 23, 2006

The Rolling Rotarians spring rally was held in Lampasas, Texas on April 20-23, 2006. The rally began on Thursday evening with heavy appetizers followed by a birthday party for Chuck Ward. Unfortunately, Chuck and Carol were unable to attend because of illness. We did sing Happy Birthday to Chuck by cell phone and enjoyed a delicious cake decorated with an RV coach.

Friday morning we visited Fort Hood and enjoyed an interesting tour of the 4th Infantry Division Museum where we saw displays of the Division’s history from World War I through the capture of Saddam Hussein and also the memorial to the fallen soldiers of Operation Iraqi Freedom I made with the bronze from one of the statues of Saddam Hussein. We then toured the 1st Cavalry Division Museum where we saw displays of the history of the Division from the Civil War and the Western Frontier and including Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the terrorism display of their recent tour of duty in Iraq.

Friday evening following a wonderful pot luck dinner Wilda Mullins, the chair of the Sesquicentennial committee, gave us an entertaining presentation of the history of Lampasas County. The planned Vanishing Texas River Cruise on Saturday morning had to be cancelled because the drought has caused the Colorado River to have such a low water level that the tour has had to be modified to only a part of Lake Buchanan. Everyone enjoyed their own activities.

On Saturday evening PDG John and Faye Salem joined us for a delicious meal at the Napoli Italian Restaurant. Following dinner John shared with us a fun program of Cajun stories learned from his many experiences in Louisiana.

After a breakaway breakfast on Sunday morning we left with plans for many of us to attend the national rally in Nashville and most of us to attend our summer rally in Brenham, TX starting August 24th. “Y’all Come!”
